A Brief History of Rock Garden Darjeeling

We were on our way to the Rock Garden of Darjeeling, our last stop of the day. The Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council made the Barbotey Rock Garden, now called the GTA. It was made to give people another reason to visit the hill town. After all, travel has been one of the main ways Darjeeling has made money. Tea farms were all along the roads that led to the rock garden.

It was the most beautiful road we had seen on our trip. So, after going back and forth between feeling ecstatic about the beautiful mountains and getting a rush from the sharp turns, we finally turned a corner where I could hear water splashing on rocks. I’ve seen enough waterfalls to know that we were getting close to the much-sought-after Rock Garden and that the sound was from a giant waterfall.

How to Reach Rock Garden, Darjeeling

From Hill Cart Road, the road leads to Rock Garden. But the way down isn’t as easy as it looks. The road is pretty steep, and the drop to the valley where Rock Garden is is quite a few thousand feet. If you’re scared, keep your eyes on this trip, which takes about 25 to 30 minutes.

On the other hand, the road to the Barbotey Rock Garden is one of the best things about the place. Seeing the colourful houses in Darjeeling’s scenery, which is in the Himalayas, is an adventure. Keep your phone cameras ready because the background is a beautiful place to take an Instagram photo.

Timing

The Rock Garden is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and people come here to see the beautiful views. So, these are some of the most important things you should know about Rock Garden Darjeeling. Make sure you go there soon.

What to See

When you get to Rock Garden, you understand what people mean when they say that every arduous trip has a prize at the end. The park was built around the Chunnu Summer Falls, a natural flowing waterfall. If you climb up the rocks, you’ll find places to sit at different levels of this terrace park that were made for travellers.

Give your tired legs a break before you go exploring again. The bubbling sound of the waterfall as it runs over rocks, the swaying of the flowers in the cool mountain breeze, the rustling of the leaves as a bird flies out of a nearby bush, and the quiet of the place are all enough to make you feel like you’re in another world.

The water from the waterfall runs into a body of water that looks like a lake and is used for leisure, like boats. If that doesn’t sound interesting, you can spend some time in the Rock Garden, which has a lot of different things to see. About 3 kilometres further downhill is Ganga Maya Park, a valley ringed on all sides by huge mountains.

A natural stream runs into the property, making it a great place to put your feet in the water. Plug in your headphones, write in your notebook, or take yourself a few minutes. Try to plan your trip around Darjeeling’s calendar of events. Nepalese culture, history, and art are kept alive through events in the Rock Garden.

The Trek

Don’t let the name fool you; this is not a rock garden. It looks more like small gardens built into rocks. The whole area was made by cutting and placing rocks around a natural waterfall. It has been cut into levels to make a picnic area with places to sit at different heights.

Each level gives you a close-up look at the waterfall as it flows from the top, over the rocks, and down to the bottom. On all the floors, there are plenty of places to sit. These seats are carefully put so the waterfall can be seen in the background. People like these seats more for the beautiful shots they let you take than for the fact that they can be used as chairs.

We began climbing up to the top of the garden. We kept going upstairs, ramps and small bridges between the rocks, until we reached the top. There were a lot of flowering plants around, and because it was winter, they had some lovely flowers. We chose to climb the mountain to see where the waterfall came from.

So, we carefully climbed the stairs and narrow paths, putting more of our weight on the side of the path that went up the mountain rather than on the fence. We went up at a steady pace and only stopped to take pictures. When the area is so beautiful, no one can be blamed.

We took a million pictures before we got to the top or as high as the road went. Unfortunately, the road doesn’t go all the way to the top. Instead, it turns around halfway up and returns to where you started. So you can see the small hill that makes up the rock garden. But it didn’t make me feel unhappy.

It was a fun hike with views that couldn’t be seen anywhere else. Even though this may not be the best that Darjeeling offers, the morning at Tiger Hill is still the best thing to do, The hill town is full of nature’s gifts, and the Rock Garden could be the cherry on top of a dish made with lots of love.
